CHAPTER THIRTEEN

JARED

The ride back into town was done in utter silence. Jared snuck glances over at Quinn, who wouldn’t look at or touch him. He sat more still than Jared had ever seen him, and the heavy quiet between them and the guards up front made each second down the mountain feel endless.

Jared was so preoccupied with Quinn that he didn’t notice that the car had stopped until a blast of cold air hit him. One of the guards had opened his door. Jared looked out to see that night had darkened the sky, and the street beyond the stoop leading up to Quinn’s apartment was completely empty.

“Get out,” the guard grunted. He and his hulking counterpart, still sitting in the driver’s seat of the car, were the ones Jared and Quinn had on video. Jared didn’t think that was an accident on Rhys’s part.

He slid out of the car, glaring at the guard the whole way. He let the glare drop as he turned to look back inside. He had to say Quinn’s name a few times before he jumped and darted his eyes to meet Jared’s as if ripped from a dream.

“We’re home,” Jared said.

Quinn blinked at him like he didn’t understand, but when Jared held out a hand, he took it and let himself be pulled out of the car.

Jared wrapped his arms around Quinn. His shirt was still covered in damp splotches of blood, and plumes of steam left his quivering mouth. Jared needed to get him inside before he got sick, but the guard who had opened the door moved to stop them.

A sneer twisted his pale face. “The video.”

“What?” Playing dumb was only stalling the inevitable, but Jared didn’t want to go down without a fight, lame as it was.

“You heard the boss. Whatever recording you think you have, he wants it gone.”

Jared wanted to argue, but he glanced at Quinn. His freckles stood out against his colorless cheeks, and he sagged in Jared’s arms like he couldn’t bear to stand anymore. Jared swallowed his anger and pulled out his phone. He clicked over to his videos, hesitating over the big red button before he jabbed at the screen to delete the recording.

“Delete it from the trash folder, too.”

Jared grimaced but obeyed. “Alright, you can go now,” he said, stuffing his phone back into his pocket. “I’m sure your boss needs you.”

After one last look Jared was sure the man thought was threatening, the guard shoved the car door closed, then got back into the passenger’s seat. Jared pulled Quinn onto the sidewalk to avoid the squealing tires as the SUV pulled away and disappeared down the street a few seconds later.

He led Quinn to the door, taking the keys, as Quinn’s fingers shook too much to open the lock. He all but carried Quinn up the stairs, before settling him in front of his armchair.

“You should sit,” he said, but now that Quinn was safe again, Jared’s mind was already racing.

He turned away from Quinn to pace in front of the fireplace.
